The world is split into 2 – morning birds and night owls. There are some who just manage somehow to be up and active at 5 am. And then there are those that are up until 3 am and won’t get out of bed until 11am if they had a choice. For the most part, there is no choice. There’s work or school, or some errand that needs to get done. And getting out of bed is one of the hardest parts of the day.
Trust me. I’m a night owl, and I’m forced to be an early bird.
If you, like me, are trying to find little ways to make getting out of bed easier then you’re in the right place!
I’m not going to tell you to go to sleep earlier because we all know night owls are fabulous at procrastinating and getting to sleep 3 hours after they say they’re going to sleep.
Make it feel like morning
Where I live is not too bright outside at night and therefore I can get quality sleep with the blinds open. Leaving them open helps me out in the morning as it naturally brightens the room and makes me see it’s day time (surprise!). It may seem silly but in the past I have slept in places where the room is blacked out and you can never tell what time of day it is. I could sleep forever…
If you prefer to sleep in a blacked out room, or you have no choice due to the layout of your room, you can get the wake up with the ‘sunrise’ alarm clock. This alarm clock gradually lightens so that you wake up with natural light. It also plays different soothing wake up sounds. Plus, it can be used in reverse to help you drift off to sleep. Clinically proven to work.
Yet night owls need an alarm clock because without one we’d sleep all day. There are hundreds of different alarm clocks designed to make you wake up. These alarms can make you run after them to catch them and turn it off, solve a puzzle, or make you do some other physical activity. They’re annoying but they work!
In the winter I’ll set my heater to go on half an hour before my alarm so that it’s nice and warm outside of the bed as well as inside it. It makes a world of difference.
I also don’t have a carpet floor and stepping out of the bed and onto a stone cold floor IS THE WORST. Which is why I have a rug and some super-cute and super-warm slippers. In the summer I put away the rug as stepping onto the cold floor is refreshing and a break from the summer heat.
Being a night owl I always spend too long in the shower trying to wake myself up. Until I got this shower timer. It can display the time, date, and temperature so that I know when it’s time to get out and get going.
Another thing I struggle with in the mornings is putting together a suitable ensemble of clothing. If I don’t plan what I’m wearing the night before then I’ll end up realizing I’m wearing a very creased shirt only once I get to work.
Once dressed and looking presentable, I’ll head over to the kitchen and make a cup of coffee. The type of coffee maker to buy depends on how many people are in the house and who drinks coffee. If you’re just brewing coffee for yourself then you’d want to buy a machine that brews one cup. If there are more people then I’d look into coffee makers that brew coffee for more people.
There are also quick-brew machines and programmable machines. If making coffee for many people I’d suggest getting a programmable machine so it’s ready when you are. For one or two cups, a small, quick machine will do.
Taking that heavenly first sip of coffee is when I know I am now, truly, awake.
And that people, is my morning routine.
