How to style ankle boots

How to wear the Fall Fashion Trend: Ankle Boots

I absolutely love ankle boots a.k.a. booties. Ask me what my favorite shoe is and that’s my answer. They’re not boots, they’re shorter than boots (as can be deduced from them being called ‘ankle’ boots). Why then are they sometimes referred to as booties? Well, some may call them ankle boots or ankle booties but people are lazy so why say 2 words when you can say one? So hence forth they were nicknamed as ‘booties’.

Why do I love them so much? They just add an edge to whatever I wear. I love edginess in my clothing. They’re also the perfect transition shoe between sandals, flats, and full on boots. They keep your foot warm enough but not too warm. Which is why they’re the perfect fall fashion trend.

They come in all shapes and sizes. There are combat ankle boots which are even more edgy and aggressive than the usual booties. Combat ankle boots are fashionable for guys also! All guys need to do is tuck their pants into their ankle boots and walla! They’re instantly fashionable and stylish. Ladies ankle boots also come with wedges, stiletto heels, or chunky heels, giving them a more feminine flair.

Let’s get Styling!

Ankle boots come in all colors. A pair of black ankle boots is a staple for your wardrobe. If you can only afford one pair then get a black pair! If you dislike black then get a more muted tone such as brown or beige- a color that can go with anything!

Obviously, you can wear ankle boots with leggings or skinny jeans. Leggings can be worn tucked into you booties. However, with jeans you should cuff your jeans (like you would roll back a shirt sleeve to cuff it).

An over-sized sweater, or blouse will look good with the jeans or leggings. Alternatively, wear a tank top and take the edgy feel further by adding a leather or denim jacket. You can pretty much wear any kind of ankle boot with this however, wearing high heel booties is best kept for night time, special events, or relaxing at the bar.

Pairing booties with skirts and dresses also works, you just need to be careful here. A pencil skirt will look fierce with booties- flat or heeled. For flare skirts though, you will want to stay with booties that have a heel and are more feminine rather than butch and edgy. Unless you want to create a paradox in your outfit between a cute and flirty flare skirt, and a pair of military ankle boots. The choice is yours!

Take a look at some of my favorite pairs of ankle boots for women, and how I would style them below.

Gray bootiesThese gray booties are fabulous. I love them! The fringes add a little boho-chic, as do the rucksack and hat. The leather jacket just tops it all off with a kick of leather awesomeness. However, pairing them all with a fit and flare knit dress brings back some of that cutesy girly style. A great example of creating conflicting characters within your outfit. This would be my go to outfit for a day out with friends.

Boho beige bootiesFor my casual ‘throw on’ outfit for fall I look for simplicity, and comfort- which is what this outfit is! A comfy pair of jeans with a soft t-shirt, an oversized sweater, a nice necklace, a crossbody satchel, and of course- the comfortable chunky heel booties!

Night out black bootiesFor a night out look  I would go with some stiletto booties like this sleek and sexy pair. I would wear them with a bold red skirt that is bound to turn heads. I would want to keep the red skirt as the focus of the outfit and therefore keep my top plain, and the accessories simple. If it were cold outside then I would wear a leather jacket, and try to match my bag with it. I love the combination of black, red, and cheetah print for night time.

Remember: If you are wearing a solid color ensemble then you can go ahead and accessorize with print. If you’re wearing print then keep the accessories more muted and solid color tones.

Fall is my favorite time- the weather is just right so that you can show off your fabulous dress sense without having to wear a big coat on top of your outfit to keep warm outside. Don’t waste a minute- get styling!
